Gemini Brookes is an Artist based in High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, a town northwest of London (accessible by train in 20 mins from Marylebone, West End of London). She was born in Salisbury, Wiltshire.
Whilst being a Fine Art graduate from the renowned Winchester School of Art, her inevitable influence of the world of style and fashion also shines through her paintings, subject to her brief job as a fashion illustrator which she pursued straight after graduating from art school. More noticeably, her first published commission, illustrating 3 of Coco Chanel's most iconic outfits for 'French Lessons á la Coco' in Amoena Life magazine - which was to be black and white only.
Brookes' work has always taken on a highly visual and decorative focus, owing to her love of the visual and also particularly decorative, pop and street artists, designers and illustrators that she follows. Brookes states that her favourite artist is Gustav Klimt, renowned for his decorative and sensual paintings of the female body. She wishes to capture the "goldenness" of Klimt's work in her own work, but instead of using gold to flatter her pieces, she uses black and white only to offer a pure and minimalist sparkle.
Using unlikely mediums on the canvas, including insulation spray foam, bitumen and radiator paint to achieve the ultimate texture and high gloss in some of her paintings, Brookes adopts an openly expressive and experimental approach to create wonderful portraits infused with an art-nouveau-meets-street-art feel.
